TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Through the years, I have taught English, Danish, History, Geography and Linguistics. Since 2013, I have been teaching at high school level at Roskilde Katedralskole, Denmark’s oldest school (app. 900 years). Before that, I was responsible for didactic development at Østerskov Efterskole, the first school in Europe based on live action role-playing, which I cofounded with the current headmaster in 2006. My early years were spent as a summer school teacher and private teacher in the 80’s and in adult second chance education from 1990 to 2006. From 1989 to 2005, I ran a small business on the side that designed informational material in the form of games for NGOs and other customers. Most of my experience and production of teaching materials is for young adults and teenagers.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I am usually confident that I can bring a class to order if need be, so I aim for a classroom full of student activity. This reduces teacher control, but increases the student’s chance of participating positively in her own learning project. My credo is: The greater the possibility for doing the RIGHT thing, the smaller the temptation for doing something wrong. I have started a blog, where I write about the thinking behind my teaching materials: https://danishgamification.org/

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I am very happy that I have been invited to share my ideas about teaching through role-play with colleagues and in teacher educations in Italy, Germany and across the Nordic Countries. The greatest moment, however, was when Chris finally, after having been in my class for three months, opened his mouth and started speaking and participating in class. For the first time in his life (according to his parents), he participated actively in schoolwork, and he kept at it until his very impressive mediocre graduation the following summer.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am a game-player and a role-player. I have followed the world of role-playing since its early European years in the beginning of the 80’s, and been part of the creation of Nordic Style Live Action Role-Play. I am also the proud father of a young autistic boy and a pair of tall young men, and a loving husband to my wonderful wife.
