This interactive journal begins with the, “What is a sentence?” standard. I have found, over the years, that teaching what a sentence is first, makes it easier teaching students the components/parts of a sentence. Once they know what a sentence is, I begin teaching the “Parts of speech” and the rest of the language standards.
