The 2015-2016 school year will mark my fourth year in a first grade classroom. Before that, I taught in my school's computer lab as a specials teacher. I never thought it would happen, but I am absolutely in love with first grade!

This collection of word work games is fantastic for a word work area. In pairs or groups of three, students take turn rolling a die. Then, based on the number they rolled, they write a word that contains the specified blend. My students really love this game, and it's always popular during a choice day!
This collection includes four blends games:
S Blends
L Blends
R Blends
Ending Blends
To play, each group will need:
Roll-a-Blend game boards (laminated if you do not have wipe-off mats)

This is a perfect print-and-go for the ENTIRE YEAR!
I use these pages for our weekly word study assessments in first grade. They follow the first grade scope and sequence for phonics skills, beginning with short vowels.
Each week’s page includes ten word spaces, a dictation sentence area, a quick at-a-glance scoring box and a phonics-related coloring image for your little ones!

I use these in conjunction with National Geographic’s Reach for Reading first grade sight words.
To master their sight words, my lowest students work with these words each day. When they’re able to read the word without hesitation, I give them a check mark. When the word has five check marks, they’ve mastered the word, and they can move on!
You could give a sticker or some other prize when they master a word, but truly, their intrinsic motivation to master these words is usually enough!
Whether you use the Orton Gillingham approach to phonics in your classroom or you don’t, this set of classroom alphabet letters and word wall headers will be perfect for your students.
Each letter matches OG’s keywords. If you don’t use OG, your students will still be able to identify a proper sound with each letter.
I use this product to assess my students’ abilities with our high frequency words (sight words) at the end of each unit. I make a note of the students’ work and send these notes home in order for parents to see their child’s progress.

I use this product with my first graders to track their fluency. Our school puts emphasis on words per minute, so I encourage my little ones to set a realistic goal and graph their progress whenever we do a fluency assessment. You could do this with your whole class, or you could reserve it for just your lowest few.
It truly serves as a great visual for your students and provides motivation for them to do their best! They're competing with themselves!

Teaching style
Our classroom is only silent when it's empty! Students work together and learn from one another constantly. We're rarely sitting at our desks, as we like to move around and work all over the classroom.
