TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have spent 9 years teaching on a shoestring budget in the midst of wealthy suburbia at an alternative high school program. My first four years, I had no classroom set of textbooks. This was where I began the process of creating engaging, interesting, hands-on projects while learning to find and use free eTexts in my classroom. A process that I came to enjoy and to continue, even after my colleagues selected a classroom set of textbooks.

The bigger challenge came with the 'no homework' policy. We had to do all reading and all projects in the classroom, requiring careful planning and trying to cram together various elements of whatever standards, expectations or mandated requirements were expected of me. (Common Core will be the third set for me in a mere decade of teaching.)

MY TEACHING STYLE

My teaching style is to find ways to get the students interested. Hands-on projects and/pr offering a variety of writing assignments for different styles-- differentiated learning. Even my selection of texts used in the classroom was carefully done to maximize student engagement, either through comparison with the movie, themes, or related projects.

I used reading question packets mainly to keep them keeping up with the text (at least mostly) so they could more successfully complete the work-- not being able to have them read at home required me to make sure (as best as I could) that they made the most of their time in class.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

In 2009, the Brighton Adult Education program, including myself, was recognized by the state as Shining Stars for excellence in adult education. I also have Microsoft Office Master certification for Office 2007.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I earned my GED rather than be a senior in high school. I spent two years at a local community college before transferring to finish my degree in Secondary English & History education. I later returned to online schooling to get a Graduate Certificate in Educational Media & Technology.
