Nurtured Learners

These picture cards feature real-life photos of specific animals in winter (penguin, grouse, rabbit, owl, deer and fox). Print the pages back-to-back with the snowflakes on one side and photos on the other. Print two sets to engage in a matching activity. I printed on white cardstock and laminated them for durability. You can also just print one set and use the photos in a writing center or hidden inside a sensory bin filled with cotton balls.

Engage your children/students in this fun fall-themed counting and number recognition game. Your children/students take turns rolling a dice and coloring in the number of leaves rolled during their turn. The winner of the game is the person who colors all of his/her leaves first. I recommend laminating or placing each game sheet into a clear plastic sleeve protector so the game can be played many times, using a dry erase marker to color in the leaves.

Keep track of the number of books read this fall with an apple and pumpkin book tracker. Each circle represents one book. Child/Student can color in the circle, mark it with a sticker, or use a bingo marker to fill it in each time a book is read or a specified number of minutes of reading occurs.

The following chart helps guide students when they practice highlighting before, during and after reading. I printed this on yellow card stock, laminated and provided each student with one to use as a reference while reading informational texts.
