This product is meant to give students practice with reading and analyzing primary source documents and responding to an authentic AP World History: Modern SAQ. This SAQ set addresses the causes and consequences of industrialization during the modern era.

This SAQ is designed to test student knowledge of the demographic and economic effects of the Columbian Exchange. It uses the most recognizable crop to be transferred as part of the Columbian Exchange: the potato.

After attending an AP Seminar training and grading hundreds of papers, I realized that students often struggle with commenting on evidence in a sophisticated way. This exercise is meant to encourage students to expand their writing beyond mere summarizing and paraphrasing.

My students have traditionally struggled with the writing of the Discussion section of their research papers. This color-coded phrasebook, which is divided by sentence/paragraph focus and purpose, gave them the sentence frames they needed to confidently write this section.

This is an ideal review exercise for an AP World History: Modern classroom! It consists of a pair of SAQs, one addressing the impacts of the Mongols and the other addressing the Mongols and the Silk Road more specifically. This is perfect for reviewing students on these two important concepts. The second SAQ, which I personally created, includes teacher notes and suggested effective responses.

I assign students to complete mini-presentations throughout the research process. This assignment was created to encourage students to begin developing their research presentations, as well as plan for the Discussion section of their research papers.

This exercise, which includes sentence frames and other supports, is meant to get students thinking about how to interpret their research data and outcomes. I find doing this supports students as they transition away from describing results to interpreting and analyzing them.

In AP Seminar, students must identify a research question prompted by analysis of provided stimulus materials, gather information from a range of sources, and create a written argument and oral presentation to address their initial research question.
