About the store
Why Math was born out founder, Emily Santora's desire to have organized and engaging resources for her students. Emily believes that students learn math best when they are able to make discoveries about math concepts on their own, rather than being solely taught "rules and tricks". Her motto as a teacher is for students to "memorize less and understand more". She has seen time and time again that fluency comes as students make connections and develop more solid understanding of the concepts they are engaging with. Emily's brings almost 20 years of experience in math education as she creates resources for her students and teachers. Her desire to create quality resources for her own students developed into her creation of Why Math so other teachers can save time in lesson prep while gaining confidence in their own teaching of math concepts.

Why Math
This standards aligned resource focuses on finding the distance between two points on a number line and coordinate plane. Instruction focuses on using sums and differences of the absolute values of integers to find the distance between two points. Students will examine patterns to develop conceptual understanding of the topic. This instruction assists in developing the understanding needed to later add and subtract integers. Examples are presented in both mathematical and real world contexts

Experience

Teaching style

Even though she always loved math, Emily failed to grasp a conceptual understanding of many of the topics she was learning. As she began to teach math, she became passionate about helping students understand the "why's" behind the math. Developing mathematical understanding is very much tied together with problem solving skills. When students ask Emily "When are we ever going to use this?", she reminds them that even if they never need this particular math skill in "real life", the reasoning and problem solving skills they are learning and utilizing will be crucial in whatever they go on to pursue in the future.

My own education history

Emily earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Mathematics Education as well as Master's Degree in Mathematics Education.
