Linear Models Performance Task - Slope and Y-Intercept in Real-World Contexts

In this performance task, students create their own word problems that can be solved using a linear equation (y = mx + b). The task contains step-by-step components and an example for each step, prompting students to... (1) Identify two quantities that varies linearly and predict a logical relationship between them as increasing, decreasing, or constant. (2) Create a rate of change (slope) and initial value (y-intercept). (3) Model the scenario with a linear function in y = mx + b form. (4) Crea

Number of Day for Upper Grades

Students struggle with fraction, decimal, percent conversion and scientific notation. In my school for 7th grade, we do a daily chart. I create a book and everyday we complete the chart. The number of the day matches with the number of days we have been in school. I then make up a fraction, decimal, percent, and scientific notation and we practice converting them and ordering them. They ace this by the end of the year from all of the daily practice!

I use this project during our multiplying decimals unit. Students apply their knowledge of decimals to calculate the percent discount on items at a store. Students create posters for their store and choose items to sell along with the price and percent discount. Other students can "buy" their items at a discounted price by calculating the percent discount. A rubric and practice assignment are included as well that I use to practice this skill.
