Space Readers Point Chart
I have created individual charts with the planets. Each chart increases by 10 points. This is a good challenge for the students. You can purchase the space shuttles to go with them as well. Once you put the first space shuttle with their name on it rest of the students want to follow. You may change the points if you want to fit your class goals. My reward for getting to each planet is a free homework pass. Make sure to print on card stock paper and laminate for durability.

In this lesson they first read a narrative about the Vikings discovery of North America, and they are in the boat with Leif! This puts them in the middle of the action 1,000 years ago!
Next, they make a map of the Icelandic-North American area. This helps increase their knowledge of geography.
They will then add spaces for their spelling words and practice those spelling words as they race from Iceland to North America to be the first European to set foot on the continent.
