Use this sorting activity as a formative assessment to gauge students' understanding of addition and subtraction vocabulary, concepts and word problems. I use this in First Grade, after we have started into subtraction problems and number sentences. As a follow up, students can solve the word problems to show their understanding! Kids love the interaction and you can see what they are struggling with!
