Geotown Project - geometry & map skills with distance learning option

The "Geotown" project encourages students to use their knowledge of 1-D and 2-D figures to create a map of a fictional town. I assign the project after we've covered our G.1.1 standard, and they work independently on it until the due date. Upon completion of their map, I have them trade maps with a partner, and they use a rubric to check each other's map (giving them more practice identifying 1-D and 2-D figures!). DISTANCE LEARNING OPTION: This year I assigned this project through our dist

Halloween Jack o' Lantern Art

This fun, hands-on project demonstrates positive and negative space art and symmetry. Symmetry is when two halves of an object or image have a balanced similarity. One half of the image is the mirror image of the other half. The human face is an example of symmetry: each half has an eye, ½ of a nose and ½ of a mouth. This project was so popular it had to be repeated every year in my 6-9 Montessori classroom!

Just what you need as a quick puzzle in math class or as a fun start to your school day. Project a set of creatures on the wall and students are challenged to figure out the rule for the creatures. Which creatures at the bottom of the page follow the rule? You might have students work in teams to identify the rule. Great for visual students and intellectually gifted students who thrive on puzzles. Bonus: I included a formatted page so students can name and draw new creature puzzles to share with

Classic "Yellow Area Material" from Montessori Elementary, helps teach concept of area as measured by identical squares on rectangle. Once that is mastered, this material shows how other shapes with equivalent areas can be converted into rectangles, eventually leading to algebraic notation (A = BH, A = BH/2).
