Using our sensory table, or a small tote, filled with water, we made predictions about what items would sink and which would float. After predictions were made, we tried the items out in the sensory table and discussed why certain items didn't behave as we expected (floated when we thought they'd sink, remained semi-submerged, or floated when we thought they'd sink). We moved what we'd predicted to what actually happened then glued them down with glue-sticks.

Compare salt water with fresh water and teach students about density with this scripted, Oceans themed activity. This lesson includes a student worksheet where students can record their observations and answer questions to reinforce their understanding of density and what happened during the experiment. Scripted lessons make it easy for new teachers or group leaders to teach without extensive training. Most required materials are common household items, common school items, or easy to find art

Will it Float or Sink? An Experiment (Editable!)

This science experiment is an easy activity for students to practice the scientific skills of predicting and classifying while learning about buoyancy. Students will make predictions, learn new vocabulary, and classify objects based on whether they float or sink. I've left the objects blank so that you can use anything that you have on hand. At the end of the activity students predict whether a peeled or unpeeled orange will float or sink. I hope your students enjoy practicing the skills needed

Sink and Float - A Science Unit

A great resource for students learning about mass, matter, and density. Easy to read fonts and bright, fun pictures. Students are given a word to define, vocabulary words for the unit, examples of those words in real life use, and a Question, Hypothesis, and Results hands on learning page to complete . A supply list is given with basic classroom supplies for the activity.

My students loved doing these experiments in Science to learn about density vs. weight. This is a one page resource, with two printable charts on it. These can be stand alone or can be put in the Science Notebook. Locate the items on the list, a clear container of water, and start experimenting! Introduce each object and have the students make predictions on if it will sink or float. Then put the items in the water one by one. Have a great class discussion! Find more Sink or Float expe

In this simple experiment, students will observe how different liquids have different densities. The Science lingo: What is density? You may have learned the equation Density = Mass/ Volume. Density is a measure of how much mass an object has compared to its volume. High density objects feel heavy, like rocks. Low density objects feel light., like feathers. We compare density of liquids and gases. For example, oil and water have different densities. This is why oil will float on the water. Thi

Explore energy transfers and transformations! Students will plan an investigation to compare how different surfaces affect a ping pong ball's bounce. Some surfaces may really surprise you and your students, as you investigate how the kinetic/mechanical energy of the ball is transferred to the surface (causing the surface to move) or the energy is transformed to different levels of noise (sound energy)! The goal is for students to explain how the ball loses energy to the surface or as noise to ju
