They make the students practice their facts without making them do silly worksheets on topcis they already know. I did this with my gifted 3rd graders and they loved it! After a short explicit lesson on multiplying by 5s and 10s, my students were ready to practice their facts.

The kids then rotate it to guide them using the one's place to their multiplication facts for the 1/2/3/4/6/7/8/9's. My students eventually learn to make these simple forms on their benchmarks/state tests to confirm they have the correct answer.
