Responding To The "Shy" Label - Advocating For Your Child with Selective Mutism
Early intervention for Selective Mutism is crucial. Left untreated, children may come to view themselves as 'people who don't speak,' reinforcing this perception in others. Children with SM can speak can be very silly, loud, and talkative when comfortable! Please avoid labeling a child as 'shy' in their presence, as it can perpetuate the belief that they can't speak. Learning an Instrument
This is a little powerpoint I put together to help my students stay true to their instrument goals and to help me keep track of it all for easy access. It also helps them to see other student's goals because it keeps them accountable for what they are learning as well as challenges them to reach for goals they may not have otherwise tried. It is also good for them because they can ask students with similar goals if they want to learn with them, or create a band. My 6th graders LOVED it.
