Number lines - one step in difficulty from Level 3. Number lines begin at whole numbers - not zero. Hence, the student can find improper fractions at any point by using a whole number location on the number line - and the student is off to the races. If students are only given discrete mixed numbers, proper fractions, improper fractions and decimals, then they 'float' in isolation. The way I use these is by putting the print outs in dry erase pocket sleeves and have the students use rulers to divide their numbers lines into however many parts I want them to. It is also helpful because if you want them to shade in part of the fraction strips they can use their markers to show where a fraction is on the line.
