6.4 B Applying Qualitative and Quantitative reasoning to real-world problems involving ratios This or That ? Part One:Students will ask their fellow classmates a This or That? Question (ie: Coke or Pepsi? / McDonalds or Burger King? / Jordans or Nikes? ) They will turn it in to a ratio of this to that and describe it in both qualitative and quantitative terms and create 3- 5 proportional ratios. On Part two of the Lab, students will create a part to whole ratio and convert it in to simplified

Penny Boat Lab: Density, Buoyancy and Archimedes

Created by
Ray Byle
This is a one period activity/lab to teach students about the concept of density and Archimedes Principle, why things float. Students each get a piece of aluminum foil and design and make a boat. They then must calculate how many pennies it will carry before sinking, and then test it. This is an excellent one day STEM project that combines science, math, design and construction. Students will use the formula Density=Mass divided by Volume.

This is a fun lab to experiment with speed! Supplies needed per group include: make-shift ramp, masking tape, 3 stop watches, meter-stick, hot wheels car and this lab sheet. Students will mark of one, two and three meters with the tape. Three students with stop-watches will stand at each of those meters. Groups will count down and as another student releases their car down the ramp, all stop watches should start their time simultaneously with the release of the car. Each student will stop their

Scale of Solar System Activities - Make a Necklace or Giant Model!

Looking for an engaging and accurate way for students to model our solar system? Most models of our solar system are not accurate and show our sun and 8 planets orbiting very closely together. Students will make a necklace that shows a more accurate scale of the solar system! This math-meets-science cross curricular activity is a fun and enlightening way for students to see the scale of our solar system. Students will learn about ratios and calculating with decimals. Sample calculations are pro
