Transforming Data - Shifting and Rescaling Data Exploration (AP Stats)

This completely editable word document guides students through creating a histogram for a set of data containing test scores and then seeing the effect of curving the scores using two different methods. The first method is a mathematical "shift" where the students will add a constant value to each original test score. The second method is a "rescale" where the students gain an additional percentage of their original test score. Students will create a new histogram after each transformation an

A bag of M & M's for every kiddo is all it takes to make a fun and learning filled class period!! Students will use their M & M bag as hard data to study probability, expected value, normal distribution and more. This activity includes: Tabulating the colors in their bagUsing claimed percentages to find how many they "should" have gotten for each color. Collect whole class dataCalculate expected valuesCreate a histogram Answer some probability questions regarding theoretical and experimenta

Mean, Median, Mode, and MOVIES! - SUPERHERO Ed. [Digital]

This activity has students explore mean, median, mode, range, and standard deviation using the review scores of different movies from the websites Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. Students begin by evaluating how each website calculates scores for movies and the extent to which each site's final score for a film is valid. They then analyze the raw review scores that go into each movies "average" rating to make inferences about the films' quality, how controversial it was among critics, and o

Learn how to find summary statistics after a linear transformation In some cases, it makes sense to transform a variable , x, by a linear factor: y = a + b x. This is known as a Linear Transformation. Our goal is to see how transforming data impacts the sample mean and sample standard deviation. Real, relevant, active, engaging is my style. I wrote this activity so you didn't you have to!

I created this activity to help students classify variables/data as ordinal, nominal, ratio or intervel level. I buy a big bag of assorted candy and put into manila envelopes, then have them sort according to the variable types. It opens up discussion and possibilities. This is used in conjunction with Bluman's Statistic Book, sections 1-3 Variables and types of data.

Probability - Chance After brainstorming the various numerical and language descriptor for describing the likelihood of events happening, students created probability lines to make connections between these different representations. Students were then challenged to create an individual probability line in their books, cutting and pasting these chance words and numbers in the correct place. Good activity to assess students knowledge of number relationships - decimals, percentages etc.
