This presentation goes along with the book "So Much Snow!" by Kristen Schroeder and Sarah Jacoby. Throughout the book, there is a snow storm that lasts 1 week, and then throughout the following week, the snow melts and goes away. I use this book to talk about dynamics and crescendo/decresendo for the first few times with my younger grades. This was designed to give students some hands on practice with scaling, ratios, andpercents. Students will bring in a piece of candy (seeing as it was just halloween for us) or you can offer them a small selection that you purchase. They will then record the measurements of the wrapper and scale the wrapper to a "larger than life" piece of candy. They get a chance to be creative, create equivalence, and identify the percentincrease in size of their work.
