This was designed to give students some hands on practice with scaling, ratios, and percents. Students will bring in a piece of candy (seeing as it was just halloween for us) or you can offer them a small selection that you purchase. They will then record the measurements of the wrapper and scale the wrapper to a "larger than life" piece of candy. They get a chance to be creative, create equivalence, and identify the percent increase in size of their work.

This panto-style readers' theatre script puts a Grade 6 class on stage for a younger audience — and the comedy practically runs itself. Pandora cannot stop herself from opening that box, Narrator 1 is losing their mind about it, and the audience gets to shout "DON'T OPEN IT!" in increasing desperation before everything goes wonderfully wrong. The theory behind this script is a variety of reading levels that will appe

This easy project can be used to teach many different topics. We make these fun xylophones when we are learning about colors. First the kids use measuring cups to fill the bottles with increasing amounts of water. Then they use eye droppers to drop food coloring or liquid watercolors into Snapple bottles. They learn that they can make the secondary colors by combining primary colors but that primary colors can’t be made by mixing colors together. Once they have created all the bottles, we giv

Music can be difficult to teach because it's so abstract (you can't see or touch it) and complex (there are many things to take in at the same time, and most aren't obvious on the first listen). How can we make music accessible and engaging to students who might not be ready to learn an instrument or notation/theory? Music:Eyes ("See what you hear") is a new e-learning platform and a transformative way to experience music through visual animations, based on the immense appeal of our co-found

In all the years I have taught, there has never been a performance where everyone was present. Regardless of the reason, I give all students an alternative way to make up the points. Whereas it is impossible to recreate a performance, this assignment touches on other standards that we don't spend a ton of time on throughout the concert season and do require students to put in work they would have been doing while at a performance. This assignment has worked well for me for a number of reasons.
