You don't need to wrack your brain to come up with minimal pairs on the spot. I've done it for you for /b/ initial words! This Google spreadsheet is organized at the top by the vowels, loosely in the order that they appear on an American English vowel quadrilateral, and on the side by the ending sound of the word. The 15 vowels targeted here are: i, ɪ, eɪ, ɛ, æ, ʌ, ɝ, u, ʊ, oʊ, ɔ, ɑ, aɪ, aʊ, ɔɪ The final phoneme (mostly consonant) contexts included are: no final consonant, final /b/, final /d
