Making Reading Real: Using Your 5 Senses to Increase Comprehension & Creativity
As a young person, I had ALWAYS hated to read. It was amazing the great lengths I would go to escape reading a novel assigned as homework! I did NOT know that you were supposed to:
1. use all 5 of your senses while reading, and
2. become the character.
Now days, I teach reading to middle school students in a behavior program and I love helping students create a love of reading through using the tools they were born with! Their 5 senses!
This is a common sense, no nonsense way to teach read

This project is a great addition to any unit involving percent,decimal, and fraction conversions. You can add in pre-determined numbers for low students and have higher level students create their own percentages. I love that is adds an element of creativity and art to math!

Student will design a state park design. They have to follow the instructions of others that want a percentage of the park to be a playground or a fraction of the park to be a garden. They have to color in a 10x10 grid to display their park, convert all of the numbers between fractions, decimals, and percents, and they must write a letter to argue why their park should be picked.

Short Story Makeover Project
Students work in groups to retell, re-enact, or present a story they have read to the class using a variety of possible methods. They learn important elements of plot, main idea, and author's craft. An interesting aspect to the project is that the class is quizzed on the groups' presentation of the story, and the quiz grades become part of the presentors' grades. Grading Rubic is included.
