Watch Your Step - A Math Problem Solving Plan
This is a strategy that I use with my 4th and 5th grade students to help them break down and understand math word problems. It's a complete PowerPoint that can be edited. The second slide, explains all of the steps. After which, the answers are stated in PROCESS format. Students must match the steps performed with the process, not just stated numerical answers.

Blank Template to use with Polya's Four Step Problem Solving and Math Strategies
Three pages with lots of space to show the thinking needed to solve word problems. Each step reminds the student what parts of the process need to be explained by him/her. Explaining the steps to employ and in the order needed hearkens back to the scientific method and the explanation of procedures. Students will make this connection with practice. Using this kind of thinking strategy will pay off on high stakes testing.
