This is a strategy that I use with my 4th and 5th grade students to help them break down and understand math word problems. It's a complete PowerPoint that can be edited. The second slide, explains all of the steps. After which, the answers are stated in PROCESS format. Students must match the steps performed with the process, not just stated numerical answers.

I use this when I introduce adjectives to help students see the power of adjectives. Famous movies and books are displayed without the adjectives. Students name the missing adjective and then give alternative adjectives that could be used instead. At the end of the ppt is a skill check slide which I used to check for understanding.

I give the homework menu out for language arts on Monday. The students are allowed to select any 5 activities to complete and turn in on Friday. They circle the ones selected and turn in on Friday with their completed work accompanied by a parent's signature. I had about 98% of students on average that completed their homework.

Capitalization Magazine Search

Students browse magazines and locate examples for each capitalization category. Students or groups can be awarded points based on the number of examples found. 1 chart tablet page labeled for each category is taped to the wall. As students locate the examples, they can either write them directly on the paper or write them on sticky notes and then place them on the page. This creates visual examples for students to see capitalization in actual practice.
