Scaffolds to Support Long Division by 2 Digit Divisors (Standard Algorithm)

Created by
Dawn Vogelfang
I created this for my students with disabilities, ENL students, and students who need a visual representation of how to divide using the standard algorithm. I print this double-sided and place in a plastic sheet protector for students to use with a dry erase marker. They keep it in their folder all year to help support them if needed while dividing. This is great to differentiate or support student learning.

Students multiply four multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm (left column) and write the problem solving steps (right column). After working on four problems by the standard algorithm, students write a nine sentence paragraph on what they know about multiplying multi-digit whole numbers and compare its multiplication strategy with three other strategies: expanded form, area model, and box method.

Place Value to Thousands: Addition Strategies Aren’t addition strategies like the Addition Algorithm and the Breaking Apart method just so much fun? We’re also quite partial to Addition Using Place Value (Decomposing) and Addition Using Base Ten Blocks. Sigh. How can an educator be expected to choose? Oh, wait! Why not explore them all? In the tenth installment of our Place Value handout series we do just that. Now, we needed room to really get down and dirty with our mini-lesson and sti

Color coding multiplication has worked wonders for my students to understand traditional algorithm in 2-digit times 2-digit multiplication. This is a strategy I have been using for the past several years. I make a big deal about the red and blue step having the potential for carried numbers, while orange and purple will not. I also call the green step the money step because if they don't remember to drop that zero they will only make $50, instead of $500. I stress this a great deal. The second
