I printed the prism net cutout on a different colored paper cardstock. I also put at least 30 cm cubes into ziplock bags and made class sets of the ziplock bags. Students first have the lesson half sheet, the prism net cutout and a bag of cubes. The build volume from the base area going up. We then filled out the definitions on the top. This activity guides the learner in finding the surface area of a 3-D object (cube). TLW classifies the 3-D object by labeling its edges, faces, and vertices. Then, given dimensions and a visual representation of the net of a cube, TLW calculate the area of each face and sum the total for the cube's surface area. I use this resource as an interactive math journal activity for my alternate middle school math class, but it can be used as differentiated notes, quiz, or for reinforcement or review.
