Students may work in pairs or alone. In this activity, students collect data on how fast they are traveling in a car during a 20 minute time period. I usually give them the weekend or a few days to collect this data. In class, they work with each other to analyze the data. They are guided to the idea that instantaneous velocity is a limit, which then leads into the idea of a derivative.

Use this activity with your Calculus class to bring solids of revolution to life! You just need to purchase a few fruits/vegetables (zucchini, squash, pear, eggplant, etc) and students will use graph paper and their calculator to create a function. Borrow a large beaker from a science friend, and students can use volume by displacement to check their results! You will also need 1/4 inch graph paper.

The activity provides a real world problem to investigate the relationships between functions and their derivatives.
