When I printed this out to use with my students, I chose an example number and then modeled the drawings on the charts provided and then laminated the papers back to back to students to use as a reference. **Please note that you will need to draw in the chips following the steps. I used the colors of the text for each step so students could follow along.

This guide can be given to students or gone over with the class on a projector / SMART Board. It plainly lays out the steps for adding / subtracting fractions using 13 / 40 and 11 / 30 as examples. Included is a description of using a factor tree to find the LCM of both denominators. Unless this is being given as a review for students familiar with the material, these two pages definitely require a teacher's explanation to their class.
