I take a different approach to integer operations. I use the models of number lines and tiles but I want to students to understand the meaning of the numbers. So instead of teaching "add the opposite" for subtraction I teach them the word opposite. I also use the idea of "terms" where they learned the meaning of when I used the tiles.
