Introduction to Trigonometric Ratios

This Smart Notebook lesson introduces students to the three basic trigonometric ratios: sine, cosine, and tangent by having them work with similar triangles. Students will first find a missing side in two right triangles using the Pythagorean Theorem. Using similar triangles students will find the ratios of sides and be introduced to sine, cosine and tangent ratios. Students then learn to write the trig ratios for given triangles. To use this file you must have the smart notebook software. C

Students have to learn how to prove the Pythagorean Theorem to meet new Common Core standards. The usual way is to cut out squares made off of the two sides of a triangle and fit them into a larger square made on the hypotenuse. Why not use Geometry? This fun, sometimes silly Smart Board presentation shows students how the theorem was proven by President James Garfield. Students follow along, answering questions along the way. The teacher (or a student, etc.) taps different characters along the

Divide students into groups of four. Each group will receive a set of placements (1-6, depending on time). Each student will complete his/her problem on a whiteboard. After all members of the group have finished, the group will add all of their answers together. One student will write the sum of their answers in the circle on the mat. If the group is correct, they will move to the next placemat. If the group is incorrect, they will look through each other’s work to identify and fix the mistake.
