Adding Integers using Temperature
In my first 2 years of teaching I found Integers to be one of the toughest concepts for students to grasp in the middle school. I tried using a rule, number lines, and tiles and for some kids it just did not click. My last resort was using a thermometer to teach the kids about adding integers. These notes / worksheet will give kids the chance to practice adding integers using temperature.

When multiplying or dividing integers, have students do the math with the numbers first, then determine whether their answer should be negative or positive depending on the signs of the numbers.
Rules will be introduced for memorization but our focus is on helping them understand why the rules are correct.

A quick and fun way to review integer rules...just pick any two integers for the students to work on and practice. For example, say two numbers like -8 and 4, and their job is to find the sum -8 + 4, the difference - 8 - 4, the product -8 x 4, and the quotient - 8/4.
