This is the ultimate Valentine's Day engaging activity that combines creativity with math problem solving! It's one of those activities where you can walk around the classroom smiling because your kids are so into it. Students are designing a candy store using fractions or measurement skills. You could even combine both! Part 1- Build a candy store, using simple materials. I gave my students construction paper, cut up snack boxes, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, and a few random beads I found.

What do we do at Thanksgiving to plan for the meal? First, we need to find out how many people will be coming over for dinner. Then, we need to plan for the turkey. Plan on serving ¾ pound of turkey to each person. You will need to need to plan for the right amount of turkey. Then, shop to find it. Next, you will need mashed potatoes. But, potatoes come in bags with varying size spuds. So, you will need to figure out how many pounds of potatoes you’ll need and pick out the right numbe

I use these graphic organizers when first introducing decimals. I make a double sided copy for each student and we place them in pocket charts. Students can use these scaffolded organizers when they work on their independent work and they love them! I also project them on the board and students love coming up to fill in parts of the organizer.
