HS Forensics Teambuilding Case Fun Activity Mystery Cooperative Learning

Welcome! This fictional case is a fun teambuilding activity and a great way to engage students in discussion with their peers. I always start my forensic science course with this case, as it entices students to use critical thinking, make arguments using evidence, and rethink their original hypothesis as new evidence is discovered. While fictional, it models the way evidence is slowly uncovered and sometimes facts are discovered at different times, so communication among colleagues is critical.

For decades, notorious serial killers like the Golden State Killer and the Boston Strangler remained shadows in the dark, until the burgeoning field of genetic genealogy finally brought them to light. The capture of Joseph James DeAngelo in 2018 marked a revolutionary shift in criminal investigation, proving that a killer's own relatives could unwittingly hold the key to their arrest. While DNA testing has long been a staple of forensic science, the emergence of personal genomics websites lik
