Motion Diagram / Motion Map Activity: Monsters in the School

Created by
Superposition
This is a Halloween themed self-paced "choose your own adventure" type activity were you are searching for various monsters in the school in order to capture them. This is done by analysing motion maps / motion diagrams. There are three motions featured in this activity: constant motion, increasing (speeding up), and decreasing (slowing down). After you determine what the motion is, you are asked to calculate where to put the "trap" in order to catch the monster.

Electromagnet - Coil Turns vs Magnetic Strength STEM Investigation

Students will investigate electromagnetism by building their own classroom-made electromagnets and testing how changing the number of wire coils affects magnetic strength. Using an iron nail, insulated wire, a battery, and paper clips, students observe how electric current creates a magnetic field and how increasing coils strengthens that field. Through repeated trials, data collection, averaging, graphing, and a CER, students discover the relationship between coil turns and magnetic force whi

Newton 1st Law of Motion STEM Investigation | Penny and Index Card Inertia Test

Students will investigate Newton’s First Law of Motion by testing how different masses behave when the support beneath them is removed rapidly. Using an index card, a coin, and a cup, students flick the card to observe whether objects of varying mass drop straight into the cup or move with the card. Through repeated trials, data recording, percent-success calculations, class graphing, and a CER, students learn how inertia affects motion and why mass influences the likelihood of movement. Learni

Zombie Finding Speed Indoor or Outdoor Running Activity- Calculate Distance Time

This is a super fun, engaging activity has middle school students calculating speed as they understand the relationship between time, distance and speed. Let them deal with zombies! This gets them outside, or in a large space, where they will find their speed as they walk slowly, run backwards as they see a zombie, and run as fast as they can from the zombie! They will then demonstrate and measure their best zombie walk. There is a data chart for each of these walks and runs plus the student
