Groundhog Day STEM Activities Simple Machines Grades 2-5 Differentiation

Groundhog 'Escape the Shadow' STEM Activities integrate simple machines and our favorite winter animal. Students will be challenged to work in small groups to make either a seesaw, elevator or catapult, and use their knowledge of simple machines, to help the groundhog not see his or shadow. These activities can be completed using commonly found art and household items on a shoestring budget. Art and music challenges are included in each activity for enrichment and differentiation.

Milk Carton Vehicles is a STEM lesson focusing on Engineering Design principles, Forces of Motion, and simple machines. My goal is to make learning exciting and authentic. Students will build a milk carton vehicle to investigate different forces of motion. Students will be learning about simple machines, wheels and axles while building their vehicles. They will investigate the relationship between potential and kinetic energy by looking at how releasing a balloon that is attached to the car will
