This is a graphic organizer that allows students to show their work when using manipulatives (like counters) to add and subtract integers. It has a space for students to draw a picture showing how they used the manipulatives to solve each problem. At the end of the worksheet, students are asked to write rules that we can use to add and subtract integers.
Students need 10-15 counters of each type to do the problems on the worksheet. Counters can be bought, personally I made mine using tile space

How to add and subtract integers?
I made use of different visual aids to help learners develop the concept of adding integers and especially subtracting integers, without basing it on their understanding of the rule "neg x neg = pos" which they might know but very few understand. In the process I hope to deepen their understanding of the multiplication rules by showing them that it fits in with the rest of maths and actually do make sense.
I have also added a comprehensive exercise on both adding and subtracting to consolidate

Adding Integers using Temperature
In my first 2 years of teaching I found Integers to be one of the toughest concepts for students to grasp in the middle school. I tried using a rule, number lines, and tiles and for some kids it just did not click. My last resort was using a thermometer to teach the kids about adding integers. These notes / worksheet will give kids the chance to practice adding integers using temperature.
