Multiplying makes things bigger, right? This is what my kids always think – as I’m sure yours do as well. Of course, this causes quite a problem when they start to work with multiplying fractions, where the “rules” they have learned for multiplication don’t seem to apply! I made this presentation to introduce my students to percents. I use this as part of my lecture to promote classroom discussion and for students to take notes from. The show walks students through the idea of breaking apart the word percent into per and cent, and it leads students through a look at both of those words/affixes. The goal is to get students to understand that percent means out of 100. The next few slides focus on converting both fractions and decimals into percents. They wal

This is a short lesson to review improper fractions and mixed numbers, and then to use those numbers in division problems. I used the context of making the keys of a marimba (xylophone-like instrument) to allow students to work through these problems. The lesson includes links to videos of children playing marimbas, a warm-up, the lesson, and an exit ticket question. This can also be used as a formative assessment to help determine students' abilities with these topics.
