Using A Dictionary - A Dictionary Scavenger Hunt

Students don't use the dictionary as often as they should. Part of the reason, I believe, is because they don't know how and they don't really know what's in there. I use this activity to force students to get into the dictionary and find out all that it has to offer. It's also a great activity to meet CCSS L.4.4.c or L.5.4.c. I start the activity with some basic instruction about guide words, pronunciation guides, and what is meant by parts of speech. I then provide students with a dictio

This can be used as a pre-assessment prior to instruction on the parts of speech and again as a post-test after instruction.

Multiplying and Dividing Fractions Quiz (or review sheet)

I made this sheet as an assessment for multiplying and dividing fractions. It contains 15 problems and challenges students to multiply and divided fractions, mixed numbers, and whole numbers in an assortment of combinations. This sheet would serve as a good pre-test, a review sheet, or a quiz. An answer key is included.

Student Report Card -- a Self-Reflection

I made this sheet as a way to hold students accountable for their learning behaviors. It's a report card for them to fill out about their effort and behaviors. The report requires students to rate themselves on 11 key learning behaviors. There's also a spot for students to write a comment about their performance. This is a nice activity to accompany teacher report cards at the end of each marking period and/or to be used as a progress report mid-quarter. Be sure to check out my math student

The quiz consists of 11 questions and includes a mix of addition and subtraction problems, including 2 word problems.

I made this activity to help students understand physical changes to matter. Students rotate through 6 stations physically changing matter using basic items found in the classroom. The idea is for this to be a discovery lesson where students discover what a physical change is and develop a definition of physical change. I teach this after teaching them about physical properties and before teaching about chemical change and chemical properties. This lesson contains teacher and student directi

Journalism / Newspaper Packet (Writing to Inform, Nonfiction)

I made this packet for my students to use during a newspaper unit. This is a fun way for students to practice writing informational text. This comprehensive packet contains 19 pages of practice on analyzing news articles, reading and writing leads, organizing news articles, and the last few pages provide students the opportunity and tools to write their own news articles. I've used this packet for the past few years with my fifth grade students, and they've always enjoyed it - especially writ

Introduction to Percents (with converting % to Fractions & Decimals)

I made this presentation to introduce my students to percents. I use this as part of my lecture to promote classroom discussion and for students to take notes from. The show walks students through the idea of breaking apart the word percent into per and cent, and it leads students through a look at both of those words/affixes. The goal is to get students to understand that percent means out of 100. The next few slides focus on converting both fractions and decimals into percents. They wal

Introduction to Square Roots and "Squaring" a Number (8.EE.A.2)

I use this activity to introduce my students to the concept of square roots. It starts by having students draw as many squares as they can on grid paper. Students are then asked to analyze the squares to see how long their sides are and what their area is (in squares). Once students have that data, they are able to make connections between the length of side and the area (side x side = area). This enables a discussion about square roots and perfect squares, as the students will have essentia

Measuring Angles Protractor Practice (4.MD.C.6)

Students have difficulty using protractors to measure angles. This activity is a great starting point for teaching students to use protractors because it takes away the lining up piece (where they struggle) and only requires them to correctly read the angle. Students will also practice drawing an angle using a protractor. This make a great introductory activity before having students actually use a protractor.

This file contains both of my fraction and decimal number line files. I use these as problem-solving activities during our fraction and decimal units. Students are given a strip of paper that is set up like a number line. They are asked to correctly place fractions and decimals on the number line. In the process, they need to use their knowledge of comparing, ordering, and converting (fractions and decimals). We first do the fraction activity and then I give them the same number line weeks

This is a creative way for students to practice organizing the details of their writing in sequential order. I use this activity when I teach students about text structure. After they've explored different texts that are organized sequentially, I set up this activity so they can practice organizing their own writing in sequence. Students will be writing about an event that happens in their classroom - a visit from a creature - which you will create. When the students are out of the room,

This activity has students using base-ten blocks to construct towers. The idea is to build the tallest tower using the least amount of blocks. The blocks are given a dollar value, and students must figure out the cost per height of their towers. This is a timed problem-solving activity. I put students in pairs and record each group's results on the board. It's fun to see the different ways students attempt to build their towers. I will record the tallest and most cost effective tower and l

Student Responsibilities Contract

Created by

I made this contract to try to hold students accountable for their behavior. It contains a list of daily responsibilities that seem to be typical for disorganized, struggling students. Responsibilities include writing down assignments in their planner, putting papers where they belong, and following directions. I find that getting down your expectations is a good first step in holding students accountable for their behaviors, and this contract serves that purpose.
