Your students will be excited for this “gold medal standard” project-based math, design, and economics activity. It’s appropriate and adaptable for 4th – 8th grade. It has been a staple for my 4th grade gifted and talented math group since 2013. You won’t be the sage on the stage. STEM Kid Engineering for GATE -- FERRIS WHEELS plus Primary Sources
In this GATE engineering journey, students will each construct a very cool Ferris wheel prototype as a final product. Along the way, they will examine primary source images, read primary source history, and integrate math, engineering, and economics in a learning process which incorporates best practices in gifted and talented education for 21st Century Learners.
This is a challenging engineering project—teacher guided. I used it for GATE 4th grade; however, my kids are experienced builders.

Design a Playground
This unit blends mathematical thinking and creative thinking in a way that will have your students asking for more. Their task is to create a new playground for their school. They will need to research existing playground equipment, learn about drawing to scale, and use mathematical knowledge such as geometry, area, and percentages to create their own scale model of a new playground. This unit has been used many times, always to rave reviews.
