We use these templates as we begin our Lucy Calkins Non-Fiction Writing Unit. But I believe they could be used with any Non-Fiction writing unit. I made several different versions of pages with more lines and less lines, different cover pages and blank ones as well. I created this journal as part of our weather unit. As we learned about weather, my kiddos filled out the pages pertaining to what we studied each day. In this journal you will find blank writing pages, common parts of a nonfiction book (index, glossary, table of contents, find out more, etc) and different sections including: a weather graph, clouds, weather tools, types of weather, effects of weather, and meteorologists. I am not sure about you guys, but I cannot stand all of those HUGE anchor charts all over my room! I most definitely agree that it is important to make the charts with your students, but once our routines are in place, I feel like it is important to de-clutter our rooms and replace them with smaller versions so that when we do have problems and need to re-visit the charts, they are still there! We had word cards provided by our school district but quite frankly, the space was not utilized well to account for primary-aged children to be cutting them out. Plus the font that was used was not primary-friendly. I use this 120 chart to help my kiddos understand that as they go down to the bottom, the numbers get bigger and when they go up to the top, the numbers get smaller. We do a lot of chanting about "Less=Hair a Mess and More=to the Floor." It really helps them visualize a picture of the kid holding a 120 chart and the poem helps when we start using the grid to do addition and subtraction of 2 digit numbers. I print one for each student, let them color the hair and shoes and then laminate them.
