4th Grade Basics

This is a simple assessment for Modal Auxiliary Verbs (hard skill to teach, especially for English language learners). Students are given a series of sentences and a choice of MAV to choose from in order to correctly complete the sentences. This skill must be thoroughly taught in order to be assessed. You may want to have your students use any notes they may have taken during class instruction.

This was a new skill I was dreading to teach under Common Core, however it turned out to be kind of fun. Students enjoyed the process of deciding what is F and I English (especially for Eng Language Learners). In this assessment students read a series of sentences and must decide if each would be used for a F or I audience. They also must give examples of their own using F and I Eng. BTW I found a cool you tube video to support this standard!

Students are given a set of sentences with a missing relative adverb (where, when or why). Students must fill in the correct RA. They are also asked to use the 3 focus RA appropriately in sentences of their own. Some students will still use these 3 as question words as opposed to RA, which may show lack of understanding. This assessment is to be given after instruction and practice of this skill.

This assessment specifically covers questions about dictionaries, glossaries and thesauruses. It includes a variety of question types: multiple choice, fill in, selecting all that are correct. This assessment should be given after students have been exposed to these 3 reference materials and have had opportunities to practice.

When given a set of common proverbs/adages, students pick 2 that they will explain using their own words. They are also given 4 additional P/A in which they must fill in the blanks. This assessment can be given after students have had instruction and practice with P/A (including those on this assessment). Some include "All that glitters isn't gold", "Practice makes perfect", "Love is blind".

A straight forward assessment of knowledge of Greek/Latin roots and affixes. Students read sentences with a given underlined word that contains a G/L root or affix, then students must give a definition using their own words. Students may use any lists or resources they may have used in class to help them come up with their own definition of the underlined words. Greek/Latin word lists can be easily found online.

A simple assessment for progressive verbs. Includes 10 fill in sentences and more.

This is a basic worksheet that can be used as a lesson, practice, review or even assessment to see how well students recognize synonyms as context clues in a sentence. (This document should download as 1 page.)

Assess skills such as Similes, Metaphors, Idioms, Proverbs and Adages. This assessment contains a mix of multiple choice and write in. There are 20 questions total.

Simple Earth Day Scavenger Hunt that can be used at school. I suggest pairng students up in 2s or 3s to make it more fun and interactive! This will also ensure safety so that students have a buddy as they move around campus. I may allow students with cell phones to take photos if they'd like in case they want to later make Google Slides (like an Earth Day journal). This can be used with most grades (K-5). A simple assessment including some common idioms. Students are given a set of common idioms. They are to choose any 4 that they understand well, use each one in a sentence and then give the meaning of the idiom. Some idioms include, "getting to the punch", "hold your horses", "catch a cold".

RL4.3 A quick graphic organizer that can be used with any story to identify characters' actions and words and then make inferences about the characters based on those actions and words.
