The techniques we’ve learned to this point with the exception of the Chi-square test deal with univariate data.  This unit will enable us to recognize when there is a relationship between two numeric variables.  We will also learn techniques to determine the strength and validity of those relationships. This unit starts the process of developing hypothesis tests.  The unit starts with a brief overview to each of the elements of a hypothesis test.  Later units will expand upon the concepts introduced here. When it is impossible, expensive or, just plain inconvenient to measure a population parameter directly we have to resort to sampling and then infer the value of the parameter within the population.  This always has a degree of uncertainty caused by the inter-sample variability.  This unit discusses the estimation of the parameter by using a point estimator and a margin of error. The central limit theorem forms the foundation of our analysis of the shape of sampling distributions.  The shapes of the sampling distributions then form the basis for confidence intervals and hypothesis testing in Chapters 8-11. This unit introduces the methods of data collection.  One of the standards of a statistics class is “Data must be collected according to a well-defined plan if valid information is to be obtained.”  The three major ways to collect data; observational studies, experiments, simulation will be introduced. This unit introduces the student to the concepts and vocabulary of basic probability.  The material learned in this section will be used as justification for techniques in later chapters.  Specifically, the definition of simple random samples and the analysis of two-way contingency tables. Random variables are not haphazard.  They follow a pattern that may become evident only over the long haul.  They have an expected value, a mean, a standard deviation and variance, just as all data.  The calculations of these parameters will provide the focus for this chapter.
