Using the Magic Tree House research guide on Pirates, I did a lesson on non-fiction note taking and turning it into a summary. The previous several days, we had been practicing the box/bullet method for taking notes on non-fiction texts. This is where you put the heading in the box and make abbreviated notes with the bullets. This lesson takes the next step by showing an example of box/bullets and moving it to a summary paragraph.

This power point was part of a two day lesson. The first day, we discussed collecting ideas, focusing on two to three, and then completing KW (know/want to know) charts. The next day, we took our KW information and put it into categories. These categories would form the headings in our feature articles. I used the California Gold Rush as my example, but each student chose their own topics to work on during independent time.

This is a power point using pop, stop, and tab. It was used during independent time during reading. I used small sticky tabs and students then shared with their reading partner/or group after a set amount of time reading. I used this specifically in our non-fiction reading unit.
