The activity is a supplemental resource to encourage students to see how Lamarck and Darwin developed their theories of evolution with a scenario of giraffes and snakes. It allows the students to see the flaws in Lamarck's ideas and how they were translated into Darwin's ideas. The assignment ends with an essay assignment that has the students consider what is a "favorable" trait in our culture and to discuss their thoughts on modern medicine and natural selection.

Students can work individually, in pairs, or small groups to simulate "thinking like Mendel" using the data he collected in his gardens. Students will (hopefully) draw similar conclusions about the fundamentals of inheritance as they work through the assignment. I use this task BEFORE teaching Punnett squares in an effort to have students understand the methodology/logic of Mendel's procedures. Updated March 2025

This mini unit was presented in two weeks before Christmas break so that the kids didn't have to remember anything over break. This powerpoint does NOT include information on elastic and inelastic collisions. Impulse-momentum theorem, conservation of momentum, and momentum are topics that are covered.

4 worksheets that have the students color code the periodic table based on the states of matter, metals/nonmetals/metalloids, and an overview of the families. The fourth worksheet encourages the students to identify an element based on a clue and then utilize the color coded periodic tables to identify its characteristics. A test is also included; I've allowed students to use their periodic tables on it.

This supplemental assignment is an introduction into a slime mold predation lab. It is aligned to the NGSS SEP: Obtaining, Evaluating and Communicating Information. Students have background information on the author and content context before reading the approximately 2 page article. There are 15 questions based on the reading; answers are italicized and should be removed before printing. There are 15 questions aligned to the reading and an extension question to further student engagement.

In an effort to not get into a "verbal battle" with students who are talking or off task in class, I created some "memes" where I changed the song titles of popular music artists with corrective behavior directives. Using the mRNA codon chart, students will examine what happens if you change each of the bases within a codon and the effect it has on amino acid that is coded. This pattern based assignment allows students to see the benefits of the wobble effect.
