About the store
24-25 is my 14th year in alternative and urban, public education. I am working to revise and add more materials that address the NGSS standards while appropriately meeting students' needs and learning gaps. I love the fact that I've been able to teach both 9th grade and 12th grade. In my 9th grade course, I focus on two "learning paths:" the first being a student and the second being content with the vision of what I need my students to be when they return to me as a senior.

Thinking Like Mendel: The Basics of Genetics and Heredity

Students can work individually, in pairs, or small groups to simulate "thinking like Mendel" using the data he collected in his gardens. Students will (hopefully) draw similar conclusions about the fundamentals of inheritance as they work through the assignment. I use this task BEFORE teaching Punnett squares in an effort to have students understand the methodology/logic of Mendel's procedures. Updated March 2025

The Relationship between Structure and Function; Common Theme

Students work through their understanding of structure determining function through inquiry questions. Students first examine the structure of their hand and then relate the structures to their functions (knuckles for knocking, etc). The questions build on highlighting the relationship between structure and function for the ultimate understanding of changing the structure will change the function. Nice beginning of the year, walk around and get to know students type of assignment.

This cooperative learning activity allows the students to "think-pair-share" or work in small groups while discovering the uses of common tools in the science lab. The students are required to learn about a specific problem that scientists are currently working on and decide which tools are neccessary to solve the problem. Includes worksheet and activity cut outs. Great for an introductory general science class or introductory biology.

Teaching style

Inquiry based instruction Discussion based lecture Project based learning However, the most important classroom "style" or strategy is relationship building with students; they need to understand that you're there for more than just curriculum. "You never teach a child a subject, you always teach a child. You teach children in a way that they will learn, and then things will fall in place for them." --Dorothy Height
