Experience

Hi TPT community! I'm Lucy, an Orton-Gillingham Practitioner and Executive Function Coach based in Vancouver, BC. I also have a background as a play-based Behaviour Interventionist and as an Early Childhood Educator. I understand firsthand the challenges many students face. That’s why I’m passionate about creating resources that make learning accessible and build confidence. Through Acorn Learning, I design engaging materials that support skill-building for kids, as well as practical tools for educators and practitioners, like schedules and planning resources, because I know how much we all juggle! At the heart of it all, my goal is to make learning meaningful for kids and manageable for educators.

Teaching style

I use a holistic approach when working with children, blending the Orton-Gillingham approach with Executive Function strategies. I started EF coaching because I saw how important it is to support the whole child. While OG builds strong literacy skills, EF work helps with confidence, organization, and self-regulation - pieces that are just as important for long-term success. At the core of my teaching, I aim to help kids feel capable and confident. When students believe in themselves, their learning (and their behaviour) often changes in powerful ways.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I’ve had so many proud moments as an OG practitioner. One of my favourites was when a student told me he could finally read the menus at restaurants. His mom was ecstatic, saying she wondered if he ever would. This student had struggled with impulsivity, attention, and emotional regulation, but once we started combining Executive Function strategies with Orton-Gillingham, things began to click. His reading and spelling took off, and along with it, his confidence. Even his behaviour started to shift in such a positive way! I also love hearing from families that their children are starting to read independently at home. One of my students has even started writing her own stories and now teaches her younger sibling how to spell.
