Teaching is my second career...and I'm so glad that I found my way into the classroom! Since 2016 I have been teaching math and science to 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders. I work with a wide range of students: gifted and accelerated, special needs, basic skills, and ESL. Prior to getting my teaching certifications, I spent a year substituting in local districts across all grades - from K to 12. It was at this time that I realized that Middle School is my sweet spot!

Math Tangram: Solve for the Variable (Both Sides of the Equation)

Tangrams are 7 piece puzzles that date back to Ancient China. Using just the 7 shapes: 5 triangles, 1 square, and 1 parallelogram - one can create abstract puzzles of animals, people, and objects. Sometimes you will have students who are looking for a challenge - I always have one or two in my class who need something beyond their classmates. This Math Tangram Puzzle takes solving for variables one step further by having the variable on both sides of the equation. Perfect way to differentiat

Math Tangram: Order of Operations with Integers (2 puzzles)

Tangrams are 7 piece puzzles that date back to Ancient China. Using just the 7 shapes: 5 triangles, 1 square, and 1 parallelogram - one can create abstract puzzles of animals, people, and objects. This activity includes two different puzzles: one with 7 expressions, the other with 6. Students will need to follow the order of operations to solve each expression. A worksheet for each puzzle is provided for you to print out and give to the students. As they work through each expression, they ca

Drag and Drop Distributive Property - with ELL Translations

Students will practice using the distributive property as they simplify expressions on their Answer Tiles. With 16 Tiles and only 12 solutions, students will have a few tiles that are not matched up. This deck only works with positive integers, but translated copies of the activity are provided for ELL students. This activity is translated into Portuguese (green card), Spanish (red card) and Turkish (purple card). All of my translated activities use the same color coded system. When I use

Mathematical Properties of Addition and Multiplication

Page 1 of this PDF is a notes sheet that I have shared with my students as a review of their Mathematical Properties. For Associative and Commutative properties, I give a definition of the root word to help them remember the difference. Page 2 will be used during our Integers unit, showing how we can rewrite any subtraction expression into an addition expression using positive and negative integers. You can share one or both pages with your students. To share just one page, you can open th

Experience

Teaching is my second career...and I'm so glad that I found my way into the classroom! Since 2016 I have been teaching math and science to 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders. I work with a wide range of students: gifted and accelerated, special needs, basic skills, and ESL. Prior to getting my teaching certifications, I spent a year substituting in local districts across all grades - from K to 12. It was at this time that I realized that Middle School is my sweet spot!

Teaching style

I try and provide a nurturing classroom where my students are able to explore math and science through games and hands-on activities. We do puzzles, group projects, have a fantasy football unit, play vocabulary games, and display our artwork in the classroom and hallways. I try to make class fun and less intimidating.

My own education history

I have a BS in Marketing from University of Scranton and an MBA from Regis University. I earned my teaching credentials for Middle School Math through Rutgers' Alternate Route program. In 2020, I went back to college with a focus on Science, earning my Middle School Science credentials in 2021. When I got my MBA I didn't think I'd ever go back to school... and here I am, going "back to school" every day.
