Students cut out and order the steps of solving three multi step equations. Students add what was done to each side of the equation to generate the next step. Equations involve combining like terms and the variable is on one side. One of the equations ends up with -n = -6 as the next to last step. This is a good way to introduce that to students.

This straightforward project can be used anytime students have to memorize facts. Simply combine the project with quizzes on the facts students are learning. I searched for mixed factoring review quizzes that could help students prepare for an Algebra 1 factoring test. I found four useful links. One of them could be used as an Algebra1 factoring test.

Fast checking and fun practice on introductory combining like terms. All terms are integers or linear terms only using n as a variable. This helps scaffold algebra skills for students who struggle in math. Students also simplify expressions to find perimeter. I use this as more practice for adding and subtracting integers. Each student makes his own lotto card. If a student has an answer to one of the questions on his card, he wins a prize. This makes checking the problems fun.
