About the store
I am in my 20th year of teaching. I've taught gifted elementary for five years and gifted/special needs/regular middle school for fifteen years. My first school was at a performing arts middle magnet school in Tampa, FL where I was tasked with integrating the arts into my science, math, and social studies curriculum with my team. For the past ten years, I have been a Gifted Intervention Specialist working with students from grades 2-8 as well as collaborating with regular classroom teachers who have students identified as gifted.

The Game of Influence

(Note: this can be adapted to Distance Learning where you give the students the prompts ahead of time, they research their position, and if you have access to Google Hangouts or Zoom, small groups can present their side). I've used this persuasive mini lesson in a 7th grade advanced English Language Arts class with gifted students. It is a great introduction to a formal debate unit. This lesson has taken between 2-3 class sessions (based on a 45-minute class) to complete. I purposely left ou

It's geared for middle school learners as well as younger students who have a greater grasp

Socratic Seminar Lesson

I created this mini-lesson for an 8th grade US History Honors/Gifted class, but can be adapted to fit any class for students to participate in a Socratic Seminar, especially a Language Arts Class. It introduces who Socrates was and reviews the difference between "debate" and "dialogue". Included are Connectors to show students how we respond to others' comments. I also wanted students to have some guided practice before we jumped into a Seminar so I created some slides to so students could ev

Experience

I am in my 20th year of teaching. I've taught gifted elementary for five years and gifted/special needs/regular middle school for fifteen years. My first school was at a performing arts middle magnet school in Tampa, FL where I was tasked with integrating the arts into my science, math, and social studies curriculum with my team. For the past ten years, I have been a Gifted Intervention Specialist working with students from grades 2-8 as well as collaborating with regular classroom teachers who have students identified as gifted.

Teaching style

My style is very open-minded. Having co-taught with Intervention Specialist, Gifted Specialists in the past as a regular classroom teachers I have learned to "learn" from others. I am hands-on, student-centered in my philosophy. Students should be working harder than the teacher.

Awards & shining teacher moments

While teaching in Tampa, I received the Social Studies teacher of the Year award. I received recognition with the science-based community learning with Earth Force where students complete a science service learning project. I've written several articles for the Ohio Association for Gifted Children Journal about a Bridge Card Club group I started with gifted learners and a career unit I developed with our librarian and English/LA teacher for gifted learners in Grade 6.
