My students LOVE this fall activity that is packed with estimation, measurement, and data analysis! Students use the scientific method in this pumpkin math and science activity as they explore if any characteristic of a pumpkin (height, weight, or circumference) relates to the number of seeds inside. In cooperative groups, students first estimate the height, weight, circumference, and the number of seeds inside all 4-6 pumpkins. Each group then finds the actual measurements for their given pu

My 5th & 6th graders FLIP for this math & science lesson! Students gather data using the scientific method to discover if a 1/3 full or 2/3 full water bottle will result in more upright landings. After writing their hypothesis, students flip water bottles 1/3 full and 2/3 full 20 times for each condition. They create class line plots of their data and find the median, mode, and mean of upright landings for both conditions. After analyzing their results, they write their conclusions. An extension

These are the ZOOM class rules I created after, like many of you, I was thrown into remote teaching in March 2020. It was very clear after my first class, that I needed to create a different set of classroom expectations than what my students were used to, if I was to lead a productive class online with them. I hope these are a help to you in your Zoom classes and I welcome any feedback on what should also be added:-)

Experience

I have enjoyed teaching for 20 years and have taught all the core subjects 3rd-8th. My focus for over a decade has been mathematics, and robotics for grades 4 - 8. For 13 years I have collaborated with Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Academy developing curriculum and coaching a middle school First Lego League team. Teaching style

I strive each day to inspire my students to pursue their passions and to impart to them the knowledge and confidence they need to become the artist, the mathematician, the engineer. . . the life-long learner who never stops making connections and positively contributing to the world around them.
