This is a guided note and introduction activity to the distance formula. The activity starts with a basic understanding of distance with horizontal and vertical lines on a coordinate plane. It then asks students to discover how to find the distance of diagonal lines using the Pythagorean Theorem.
This is meant to be given after students have learned about the different type of rigid motions. The assignment can be tweaked to include translations and reflections. Students are asked to write about their process of the mathematics. A similar problem with an exemplar is also attached so that students can see the expectations when writing about mathematics.
